Originally from County Cork, founders Martin and Mary Connolly moved to New York in 1986. After a visit to San Francisco, they moved West in 1990. Harboring a strong entrepreneurial streak and attracted by the Bay Area’s open-minded spirit, Johnny Foley’s Irish House became the culmination of their dream when it opened in 1998. Named for a local Irish tenor with a rebel streak, from the day it opened with the cast of Ireland’s famous Riverdance troupe cheering them on, Martin and Mary have made Foley’s a home away from home for the Irish community - and a place where everyone is a “little bit Irish” all year long.

Irish natives Mick Graham, and Mairéad (pronounced “Mawr-ade”) McGarry opened Maggie McGarry’s in August 2006 with the intent of creating an authentic and fun Irish pub experience in the heart of North Beach. Featuring one of the best bar stages in San Francisco, the space has previously been home to some of San Francisco’s most famous landmarks including “Lost & Found”, “The Coffee Gallery”, and “Mrs. Smith’s Tearoom”. Janis Joplin, The Doors, Robert Plant, Grace Slick, and The Chieftains have all performed at Maggie’s in its previous incarnations. Our Irish pub is named after the first High King of Ireland, Brian Boru (c. 940-1014), and a more recent Irish Chieftain, Michael Collins (known as "The Big Fellow"). In December 1921, Michael Collins signed an Anglo-Irish treaty agreement with Britain which was later ratified by Dáil Éireann & the British House of Commons, enacting the Irish Free State. The Chieftain's identity is intertwined with the 50 million Americans who claim Irish heritage. It's this Celtic identity that inspired two sets of brothers from Ireland, the Nagle's from County Kerry and the McVeigh's from County Clare, to place their Irish roots in the form of an authentic Irish pub & restaurant in the heart of downtown San Francisco. The building that houses The Chieftain is a historical landmark built in 1912. Originally called the M&M Tavern, our pub was opened by Martin McVeigh in 1934 just after the Prohibition repeal.

In the heart of San Francisco’s Inner Sunset, The Temple Bar is a new beginning built on old roots. For us, this bar is more than just a business—it’s a homecoming. From 2005 to 2008 We ran this space as The Blackthorn, creating a lively, welcoming spot where neighbors became friends over great pints and good craic. In 2008, we purchased the building and stepped back, leasing out the business for the next 16 years. But the pull of this place never left us. We returned So in 2024, we returned—not just to reclaim it, but to completely transform it. With a full renovation and a fresh vision, The Temple Bar is something entirely new while still holding onto the heart and hospitality that made this space special in the first place.
