The United States vs Ulysses at the Irish Arts Center in NYC

Runs Apr 30, 2025 – Jun 1, 2025. It’s 1933, and James Joyce’s sexually explicit Ulysses has been banned in the U.S. for a decade. But now, a hungry young publisher and an ambitious lawyer have teamed up to take on the Puritans. Can they convince the judge that Ulysses is not obscene? And what will happen when Ulysses gets under their skin—and Molly Bloom gets into their heads? The United States vs Ulysses is a bawdy courtroom drama telling the true story of the New York trial that liberated James Joyce’s seminal novel from American censorship and made Joyce a cultural icon.

Irish Arts Center, founded in 1972 and based in Hell’s Kitchen, New York City, is a home for artists and audiences of all backgrounds who share a passion or appreciation for the evolving arts and culture of contemporary Ireland and Irish America. We present, develop, and celebrate work from established and emerging artists and cultural practitioners, providing audiences with emotionally and intellectually engaging experiences in an environment of Irish hospitality. Steeped in grassroots traditions, we also provide community education programs and access to the arts for people of all ages and ethnic, racial, and socioeconomic backgrounds. In a historic partnership of the people of Ireland and New York, Irish Arts Center recently completed construction on a fully-funded $60MM state-of-the-art new facility to support this mission for the 21st century.

Big City Folk Song Club (Spring 2026)
Big City Folk Song Club continues its residency at IAC with a monthly showcase of original songwriting from NYC artists. Curated and hosted by acclaimed Irish songwriter Niall Connolly, the series has long been a welcoming space for emerging and established voices alike, counting Lana Del Rey, Anaïs Mitchell, Lucius, Mundy, Mick Flannery, and Susan O’Neill among its past performers.
Traditional Irish Music Session
Come to Mary O's every Thursday Night from 8pm-10pm (and often later) to have your spirits lifted by a community dedicated to having fun and doing their part to keep the magic of Traditional Irish Music Sessions alive and well!!! The Session was started by Caitlin Warbelow (caitlinwarbelow.com) and is open and welcoming to all levels of musicians. Mary O'Halloran provides the space, a well stocked bar and delicious food to keep us going strong! We can't wait to see you this Thursday
Traditional Irish Sessions in the Café
Come to IAC for free evenings of traditional Irish music and community! Beginner players kick off the event at 6pm; advanced players jump in at 8pm. Audience members—join at any time. The Devlin Café is open all night! Slow Session // This session is aimed at musicians who are developing their repertoire and are new to participating in traditional Irish sessions, enabling them to learn the customs and etiquette of a typical session. Traditional Session // This session is aimed at practiced musicians who have developed their repertoire and are comfortable playing with other musicians.
