The original Irish House was established by Mr. James Heverin in 1886 as general drapers. It was described in the local press at the time as being one of the finest business establishments west of the Shannon. The drapery business was passed down through the generations and operated until the late 1950s. In more recent years, the original shop has been split into two commercial units, one of which now houses the Irish House Bar. The Irish House Bar was established in 1992 by Paul Heverin, a great grandson of the original owner James. Much of the architecture from the original shop remains the same and is still visible around the bar. The Irish House is now being run by Paul’s nephew, Alan Heverin who is the 5th generation of the family to occupy the building. About This cosy, traditional Old World bar located in the heart of Castlebar is home to the best Pint in the west. The bar which is split into three main sections as well as an all weather outdoor seating area is a popular spot with all age groups. There is also a Pool Table on the mezzanine level and all major sporting events are shown on numerous screens around the bar with fantastic surround sound.. During the winter, the open fire greets you as soon as you walk in the front door. As you look around you, every shelf and ledge is adorned with antiques and memorabilia which help create the wonderful atmosphere that this pub is famous for, the kind of atmosphere you cannot manufacture overnight. Bar food is available daily with a large selection of Sandwiches, Crispy salad Rolls, Panini, Baps, Wraps as well as Freshly made Soup of the day and a large selection of teas and freshly ground Coffees.
