Molly's on the Market

Molly’s at the Market on Decatur Street has been a French Quarter fixture since 1974, founded by the late Jim Monaghan, a larger-than-life character who helped shape the Irish bar scene in New Orleans. Though it’s no longer affiliated with Erin Rose, the spirit of Monaghan’s vision still lingers in the way Molly’s brings people together under one roof. It has that easy, lived-in feel you only get from a bar that’s been around long enough to collect its share of stories. Unlike the snug pubs you’d find back in Dublin or Cork, Molly’s is more of a stand-around kind of spot. You’ll see groups gathered near the front with cocktails or frozen Irish coffees in hand, talking away as the night rolls on. There are stools at the bar if you want them, but the real draw is the flow of people and the social buzz of being part of the crowd. It’s the kind of place where you might step in for one drink and end up staying because the conversation’s too good to leave. And of course, there’s the drink that made Molly’s famous: the Frozen Irish Coffee. First poured here in the 1980s, it’s a creamy, boozy delight spun from coffee, brandy, and a touch of whiskey, churned out of a daiquiri machine and topped with coffee grounds. It’s become a New Orleans classic in its own right, sought out by locals and visiting bartenders alike. You won’t find anything like it back in Ireland, but that’s exactly the point—it’s a Crescent City creation with just enough Irish flair to give it character. At its heart, Molly’s is about community. It’s not the place for quiet reflection over a solitary pint, but for laughter, stories, and the kind of lively energy that comes from a good crowd. It’s rough-edged in the best way, warm without being polished, and utterly true to itself. For all the French Quarter has to offer, Molly’s stands out as a spot where the craic comes easy, the drinks keep flowing, and the welcome feels genuine.
